The Sobranie brand was established in London in 1879. Its historical roots are linked to Albert Weinberg and later the Redstone family. The famous pipe mixture Balkan Sobranie is typically dated to the 1920s and became so significant that it later gave its name to an entire category of "Balkan blends." The original Sobranie came under Gallaher in the 1980s. The old pipe Balkan Sobranie gradually disappeared — from the American market in the 1990s and definitively around the middle of the first decade of this century.

In 2011, Balkan Sobranie was reintroduced to the market. The production was taken over by J. F. Germain & Son, and the American distributor became Arango Cigar Co. Therefore, the can has inscriptions on the bottom stating "Pipe Tobacco Made Under Licence in the British Isles" and "Imported by Arango Cigar Co."
J. F. Germain & Son is a small traditional tobacco company from St Helier on Jersey. The oldest preserved records of its business date back to 1820, and production still takes place at the original location. The company is known for extremely sought-after blends from Esoterica, such as Penzance and Stonehaven.

Latakia adds smoky, woody, slightly tarry to "campfire" tones. Orientals contribute dry spices, herbs, incense-like qualities, and a slightly tangy exotic aroma. Virginia brings natural sweetness and rounds out the whole blend. The characteristic incense-like character is something that has been repeated in descriptions of Balkan Sobranie for decades.

As of 2026, Balkan Sobranie remains an active product of J. F. Germain. The issue is the quantity. Germain is a very small manufacturer, and Balkan Sobranie appears in stores in irregular batches. Smokingpipes currently lists it as temporarily out of stock. It is one of the hardest tobaccos to find on the global market. It is produced in very small batches, and once specialized shops stock it, it usually sells out within minutes. Therefore, retailers often limit purchases to 1 to 2 tins per person.
