Missouri Meerschaum – Luminaire
0 oz / 56.7 g, 2023

A blend from the MMC Elite line. Missouri Meerschaum Company is the brand for which the tobacco was created. It is a famous American manufacturer of corn-cob pipes from Washington, Missouri. Henry Tibbe started making corn-cob pipes there in 1869; in 1907 the company adopted the name Missouri Meerschaum Company. However, the tobacco itself is produced by Cornell & Diehl (C&D) in South Carolina. Smokingpipes explicitly states that the entire trio of Luminaire, Drawdown, and Party Line was made by C&D for Missouri Meerschaum. The inscription on the jar: “Laudisi Enterprises, Inc., Longs, SC” is because Cornell & Diehl belongs to the Laudisi Enterprises group. C&D just moved in 2023 from the Longs area to a new facility in Loris, South Carolina.
The MMC Elite line has three blends:
Luminaire – electricity
Party Line – telephone
Drawdown – water supply
All of them recall the technological innovations of the Tibbe family in the town of Washington, Missouri. Luminaire specifically refers to New Year's Eve 1892. Anton Tibbe, the son of founder Henry Tibbe, built the first power plant in the town and lit Washington with electric light for the first time on New Year's Eve. Hence the name Luminaire – light / lamp.
Composition:
Red Virginia + Cavendish + Katerini Orientals + true St. James Perique.
Smokingpipes specifies that the dominant components are Red Virginias and Katerini, with Cavendish and Perique making up smaller accompanying shares. Perique comes from 31 Farms in Louisiana, a supplier of true St. James Parish Perique for Cornell & Diehl.
This means that it is essentially a very interesting VaPerOr = Virginia + Perique + Oriental, complemented by Cavendish.
Red Virginia
Forms the body of the blend. It provides natural sweetness, darker fruitiness, bread and grain notes, and a slight tartness. Because the tobacco is pressed, the character of the Virginia is deeper and darker than that of a regular ribbon cut.
Katerini
This is a Greek oriental tobacco. It adds herbal, earthy, woody, slightly floral, and exotically spicy notes.
Perique
True St. James Parish Perique adds dark fruit – plums, raisins – fermentation, and typical pepperiness.
Cavendish
Rounds out the blend, adding a smoother sweetness and body.

Tasting:
Smokingpipes is quite detailed. In flavor, it finds primarily: brown sugar – bread and grain – gentle tartness – wood – cocoa – cedar – earthiness – pecans – light spice. Users also describe: raisins, fermented fruit, stewed dark fruit, citrus, hay, herbs, floral notes, and pepper in the retrohale. This sounds complex, but I would practically characterize it as: naturally sweet → slightly tart → spicy → darkly fruity → woody. There should be no added aromas like vanilla, rum, chocolate, etc.

Is it a good tobacco for aging?
Quite so. Red Virginia + Perique + Orientals and pressed flake are a combination that can pleasantly round out over several years if well sealed. Even at its initial release, Smokingpipes noted that some components had considerable age and that the oriental tobaccos and Perique should become more pronounced with further aging in the blend. For a three-year-old piece, I would therefore expect compared to the fresh one: greater sweetness of the Virginia, fewer sharp edges, a more unified flavor, and a darker fruity character of the Perique.
